Choosing the Right Street Name Sign

Street Name sign size and lettering depend on the roadway type, speed limit, number of lanes, and whether the sign is post-mounted or overhead. For many post-mounted applications, the MUTCD recommends 6-inch initial upper-case letters with 4.5-inch lower-case letters. On two-lane local streets posted at 25 mph or less, smaller 4-inch initial upper-case letters with 3-inch lower-case letters may be used.

Higher-speed, multi-lane, and overhead installations generally call for larger lettering. One detail that often causes confusion: the speed limit used to determine letter size is the speed of the roadway the sign faces, not the street named on the sign.

Street Name signs must be retroreflective or illuminated for nighttime visibility. Your state or local agency may also have additional requirements for size, color, reflectivity, or mounting.
